Innovation starts with testing
Because Sodecon tackles complex soil and water contamination issues, we develop tailor-made solutions that often rely on innovative technologies. We begin with detailed lab and pilot testing to fine-tune our techniques for practical application. This ensures that the selected solution is not only technically viable but also delivers proven results on site. This way we guarantee that the chosen approach is both technically feasible and effective in the field.
Examples from practice:
1. PFAS water treatment
PFAS is a complex group of contaminants, often with multiple components present simultaneously. In the lab, we perform batch and column tests to determine the most suitable filtration medium. This specifically looks at the interaction between different filter media and the water to be treated.
We also conduct tests in the field: by splitting the water stream into two and treating each part with a different filter medium, we can evaluate the effectiveness in realistic conditions.
2. In situ metal precipitation
For precipitation of heavy metals in soil, we test different precipitation products and dosages in the lab. Based on these results, we select the most suitable product for field application, significantly increasing the likelihood of successful remediation.
3. Biodegradation
When there is uncertainty about the biodegradation of a particular contaminant, we perform several lab tests using the techniques listed below:
- Microcosm tests
- PCR and Next Generation Sequencing analysis
- Isotope analysis (¹³C, ³⁷Cl)
- Bioaugmentation
These tests provide insight into the degradation capacity and microorganisms in soil and provide a solid basis for evaluating biological remediation techniques.
4. Chemical oxidation
To determine the effectiveness of chemical oxidation, we test in the lab both the degradability of the contaminant and its interaction with the soil matrix, which is often a determining factor in the success of the technique. We also evaluate different activation mechanisms (such as thermal or chemical activation of persulfate) to determine the most appropriate approach.
5. Pilot testing in the field
Following successful laboratory results, we validate the selected technique through an in situ pilot test. This allows us to determine key injection parameters such as:
- Volume, flow rate and pressure
- Radius of influence
- Groundwater flow velocity and direction
These data are crucial for designing an efficient, full-scale remediation solution.
By strategically deploying lab and pilot tests, Sodecon succeeds in supporting innovative techniques with practical research. This enables us to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions tailored to each specific contamination situation.
